ALASTAIR LAING
LANDSCAPES: SEASCAPES

Space Artworks, Morningside, May 4th - May 31st

For the month of May we are delighted to be exhibiting the landscapes and seascapes of Alastair Laing. Originally a calligrapher and graphic designer, Alastair only began to paint towards the end of his professional career. Since then he has developed a unique and recognisable style of work, featuring simple frameworks, strong horizontal and vertical axis and calligraphic shapes.

Working from memory, photograph and imagination, Alastair recreates moments in land and sea that offer particular visual interest or have acted as significant visual signposts in his life.

A bold use of shape and form may seem in stark contrast with the scenes of nature Laing is inspired by and choses to paint. Such juxtaposition is not, however, unintentional. Laing is fascinated by moments of human intervention or influence on natural environments. As well as providing visual intrigue, his use of graphic shapes to convey organic subject matter cleverly reflects this thematic concern.

We look forward to sharing Alastair's work with all visitors to the gallery this month.
